Temple complexPura Penataran Agung Lempuyang frames Mount Agung between two soaring stone gates. One of the most photographed sights in Bali, also one of the most spiritually charged. Visit at dawn for ceremonies, light and very few crowds.
Dive site, TulambenA WWII US Army cargo ship torpedoed in 1942, now resting in 5 to 30 metres of clear water just off the volcanic black sand of Tulamben. Accessible from shore, dense with marine life, considered one of the top wreck dives in Asia.
Water palace, KarangasemBuilt in 1946 by the king of Karangasem and rebuilt after the 1963 Mount Agung eruption, this serene complex of pools, fountains and stepping stones is a quiet half day visit, ideal in the late afternoon when the light turns golden.
Sacred temple complexA complex of 23 separate but related temples on the slopes of Mount Agung, the most important temple in Bali. The setting is dramatic, the cultural weight unmatched. Recently developed visitor infrastructure makes longer visits comfortable.
Beach, snorkellingBlack volcanic sand, calm shallow waters and an offshore coral garden that is best snorkelled at low tide. Traditional jukung fishing boats line the shore at sunrise. The beach is at walking distance from the resort.
Snorkelling, freedivingThree healthy reef systems within a 15 minute boat ride. The Jemeluk Bay drop off is a favourite for free divers, the Pyramids site for snorkellers. Visibility runs 15 to 25 metres on a calm day.
Day tripA scenic drive through the volcanic central highlands ends at family run plantations where you sample arabica, robusta and the famously divisive luwak coffee. Clouds drift through the trees in the late afternoon, the views are spectacular.
